Tune it up before you head out on the highway

Spring has finally come to the North Shore and with it, the roar of motorcycles. The beginning of May seems to mark the arrival of motorcycle weather and the influx of bikes on the road.
Now is the time to be getting your motorcycle ready for the summer driving to come. It doesn't matter whether you are a sunny weekend-only driver of a vintage '69 Triumph Bonneville or a daily commuter getting to work each day astride a new Yamaha Road Warrior - every bike requires regular inspections and care.
To prepare your bike for that first turnover of the new season, you will want to make sure that the battery is fully charged. Get some fresh gas in the tank and give a start.
Before you take it onto the road for that first ride make sure your have adequate insurance and your new sticker is properly displayed.
Inspect your bike from front to back, ensuring that there are no damaged cables, leaking seals, exposed wires, and correct hydraulic fluid levels. Now is the time to clean and properly lubricate your chain. Then while you are thinking about lubrication, check the movement on your clutch lever and oil the cable to keep things moving smoothly.
Tires should be checked for wear and replaced if necessary. Remember - all that is between you and the road is that stripe of rubber. Examine all spokes for tightness.
Any performance issues, such as poor starting, worn brakes or vibrations should be addressed now. If these repairs are beyond your abilities, then it is time to head to the shop and have a qualified mechanic examine your bike. Money spent now could improve your safety later.
Another area that needs your attention at this time of year is your own personal protection. If your helmet has received a blow in the past, it may need replacing. Check your leather jacket, pants, boots and gloves, to make sure they all still fit properly and do not require any repairs. Having a mender re-stitch the seams can greatly increase their lifespan.
Once you are ready and move out of the driveway for your first ride, remember to take it easy. Get reacquainted with your motorcycle, rediscover your feel for the machine and its handling. Remember, too, that the car drivers are also getting reacquainted with the bikers and are having to learn to share the road again. Take it easy and don't become a statistic.
A motorcycle is a wonderful form of transportation, offering a unique experience to those who ride them. There is a whole summer ahead to enjoy, so drive responsibly and enjoy yourselves.
