Making healthy habits stick
by David Hennessey
Dr. Ken Blanchard, author of The One Minute Manager, once said in an interview that most people are interested in improving their lives, be it having better health, improved relationships or more fulfilling work.
However, he went on to say, "few are really committed."
There is a real difference between "being interested" and "being committed."
If you are interested in improving your family's health you will, for example, read about healthier eating habits, attend seminars on better eating habits and eat consciously when you are out with family once a week. However, after a long day's work you may decide you do not have the time to prepare a wholesome meal and will prepare food solely to fill the void, not to nourish the body.
When you are committed to healthier eating habits you make a plan for you and your family, a gentle, practical plan you can use step by step to improve your family's health. You involve everyone in the application of the "healthy eating plan" so it is an "agreement with" and not an "order from" Mom and Dad. Then you stick to your plan until it is a habit.
To make a plan a habit is not so easy. There are many individuals with information about health but there are not so many who know how to make healthy habits, stress free. If you need assistance, get in touch with a professional coach who knows how to help you make habits easily. You can seek out a coach at www.coachfederation.org.
