CARSON Graham got its AAA football team back on track last weekend by staging a 42-0 rout of Mount Douglas at home.

The Eagles, now 2-0 on the season, were slated to play league-leading Notre Dame on Friday.

The Eagles' attack last weekend was led by quarterback Brady Carpenter, who went 8-13 for 165 yards and three touchdowns on the day. Second-string tailback Mark Hallaway again put together a solid performance on the field, rushing 24 times for 160 yards and three touchdowns.

On the receiving side, Jordan Marshall made four catches for 72 yards and a TD, Nick Robertson made a pair of catches for 45 yards and a major and Alan Williams added another on a 42-yard catch.

On defence, Ryan Martin led the pack with 10 tackles, while Dorian Urquhardt added nine of his own.

"We ran the ball well, which was a real positive, the line played very well and held their blocks and Hallaway had a great game," said head coach John Buchanan. "He rushed for three touchdowns and had a couple called back. He had a fumble early on and was a little gun-shy initially but then he really concentrated on holding onto the ball and following his blocks and did a great job.

"Ryan Martin had a huge game from defensive tackle as well. To lead the team in tackles from a defensive line position is pretty impressive, especially a tackle spot. He was really covering the field well and he was playing guard on offence on top of that."

Following the game, Carson held its first fundraising event for the new school alumni and booster club. Ex-CFLer Gerald Roper, who graduated from Carson in '78 and played for the University of Arizona, won the grand prize of $1,000 at the Calcutta draw.

"The people I talked to had a great time," said Buchanan. "Some of the guys were really happy that there was some kind of football alumni thing rolling at the school. They've been waiting for it for a long time."

Handsworth, meanwhile, ran its season record to 5-1 by downing the defending B.C. AA champ Ballenas Whalers 36-6 last Saturday.

Royals QB Steve Williams went 4-6 for 96 yards and a touchdown and Bruce Bowman rushed 16 times for 75 yards and a pair of touchdowns. Nick Trenkel made three catches for 72 yards and one major.

Royals offensive coach Jay Prepchuk - whose Windsor Dukes were defeated by the Whalers in the provincial AA championship last year - said that Ballenas is not the same group of guys this time out.

"I thought we would get a bit of a test in the game but they turned the ball over - they basically gave us the ball three times in a row - and we just kept scoring. It was 21-0 before we knew it."

It was the second-straight loss for the Whalers in as many weeks.

"They don't have a quarterback and their running back from last year has been injured so they're not the same team, but they're still big. They have at least three guys that are 300 pounds plus."

Prepchuk was also pleased with the fact that his team didn't commit one turnover in the game. On defence, Mike Leahy led the way with seven tackles, while Jarone Gittens, Blaise Sack and Hiro Sato all combined for four hits each.

"We had some great hits. Tex (Antonucci) played very well on defence, and Bowman had a big day. He's kind of an unsung kid where he's not breaking a whole lot of plays, but he's certainly making some tough yards and he's blocking extremely well. He's one of the best pass blockers that I've ever seen at any level."

The only other local team to record a loss last weekend - other than Windsor, which lost 44-12 to Sentinel's Spartans - was West Vancouver, which went to 0-3 on the year with a 42-0 loss to Vancouver College.

Quarterback Ian Noble went 9-19 for 76 yards, Gordie Sawers made 10 carries for 37 yards and on receiving, Billy Quirke made five catches for 45 yards and Robert Trasolini tracked down three for 30 yards. On defence, Kyle Burdett recorded six solo tackles.

"Vancouver College is good," said head coach Art Edgson. "They've got a strong team, they're well coached and they have an outstanding quarterback. Our team is young, the players get pretty worn out and beat up but they're tough kids and they show a lot of courage. . . . Trasolini made some big plays during the game as did Jesse Eker, a grade 10 corner who intercepted a pass. Trasolini anchors our defensive line and recorded a sack, plus he had four tackles and made three outstanding catches at the tight end position, two of them in traffic. We're going to go to him a lot more."

West Vancouver was slated to travel to the Island to play Mt. Douglas on Friday afternoon.
