TWO North Shore natives have been voted to the BC Lions' 50th season all-time "Dream Team."
Offensive tackle John Blain and fullback Sean "Diesel" Millington were both named to the 26-member team. Both athletes attended Carson Graham (Blain graduated in 1976 and Millington in 1986) and played with the school's Eagles football program.
The 26 players and one coach were voted to the dream team by the fans. Over 4,500 ballots were cast.
In order to be on the dream team ballot, all of the players must have met the following criteria: they must have played at least 50 games or have been a finalist for the CFL's Outstanding Player award. All of the coaches on the ballot must have had either a winning record, a Grey Cup win or have been the first coach of the team.
There were 137 players and nine coaches listed on the ballot. From June 22 to Aug. 22 over 4,500 votes were submitted by either cutting ballots out of the Vancouver Sun and The Province, filling out ballots during BC Lions' home games, on the Internet or at Lower Mainland Bell World locations.
The final dream team list consists of 12 positions on offence, 12 positions on defence, one punter/kicker, one return specialist and one head coach.
Following is the 50th season all-time BC Lions dream team:
OFFENCE - tight end Harry Holt; running back Willie Fleming; quarterback Doug Flutie; wide receiver Mervyn Fernandez; fullback Sean Millington; lineman Jim Young; corner Alan Wilson; guard Tom Hinton; guard Jamie Taras; tackle Jim Mills; tackle John Blain; and slotback Darren Flutie.
