THE North Shore is sending a contingent of more than 200 athletes, coaches, managers and chaperones to the BC Summer Games, which are set to kick off tomorrow morning in Abbotsford.
Among the local links who will see action under the Vancouver-Squamish banner are 181 athletes, seven managers and seven coaches and and half-a-dozen chaperones.
Locals competing for the athletics team are West Van's Helen Crofts, Matt Diemer, Emily Farnan, Max Marshall, Blair O'Neill and Katherine Shoults, North Vancouver's Colin Parker, Dayne Jackson, Dustin Holmes, Elyse Kantonen, Jeff McKinnon, Chantelle Groenewoud, Colin Parker, Zoe Robyn, Megan Montgomery, Rheanne Sleiman, Jessica Smith, Paul Woytkowiak, Adam Wasylyshyn and Kyle Stephenson and Squamish's Tiffany Sprenkels.
North Van's Dave Calver and James Hustvedt will compete in wheelchair athletics, while Bowen Island's Derek Sinke and North Van's Nic Miskin will take to the diamond as part of the baseball team. Three North Van boys - Sean Ashkenazy, Griffin Bullock and Leyland Seto - will play for the basketball team, while five North Van residents will suit up for the girls basketball team: Kristin Leigh, Beth McNeil, Margot Merinsky, Julie Seabrook and Lisa Therrien.
Squamish's Gavin Arnott, West Van's Graeme Bant and Micayla Gatto and North Van's Owen Hope all will aim for gold in cycling, while North Van's Ryan Ollis competes in the visually impaired cycling event. Five divers from North Van will hit the board (Laura Campbell, Erin Dyk, Suzie Jones, Keith Tidey and Courtney Gillman) while North Van's Bridget Martin and Mairin Platt and West Van's Sara Pocock will mount up for equestrian events. The North Shore is well represented in field hockey, with nine athletes from North and West Vancouver making the trip: Mikaela Barker, Nicola Graham and Carly Graham, Kelley Lusk, Elizabeth Priest, Francesca Ruddick, Sarah Zargarpour, Kelsey Shugg and Alysha Sekhon. West Van's David and Michael Rose will tee it up for the golf team, while North Van's Damian George, Daniel Roberts, Bryant Smele and Joel Taylor will play on the lacrosse side.
Twenty-six boys and girls from the North Shore will take to the rugby pitch at the games. For the boys, it's Greg Brown, Peter Haile, Aaron Johnstone, Harry Jones, Matt Levy, Hayden Robbins, Mackenzie Sinclair, Mackenzie Spurr, Josh Tolentino, Daniel Weidener, Tom and Adam Woodward. For the girls, it's Lisa Bjornson, Margaret-Anne Bowden, Becky Ellan, Madison Damien-Williams, Jessica Gandy, Marissa Hallaway, Kelsey Hilton, Candace Jackson, Emily Kurz, Shannon Lambie, Krysta Longridge, Rachel Martin, Darcy Patteron and Brittany Timmons.
West Van's Will Cowan, Lindsay Cutting, Ben Scott, Jon Scott, Alanna Vittery, Laura Vittery and Hayley McLean will all compete in the sailing arena, as will North Vancouver's Ethan Plato and Lee Stratas Polychronopoulos.
A dozen local boys will play soccer at the games - Liam Blair, Ian Clark, Michael Costley, Matt Fargey, Alec Forsyth, Patrick Hong, Michael Mctuash, Jarad Plato, Jeff Rothdram, Instan Sandles, Jake Sibley and Dan Southan - while another 12 local players will share time on the girls team roster: Anna Bradford, Jenny Alderton, Stephanie Clark, Amy Harrington, Hayley Ivancoe, Sunni Keill, Chelsea Klein, Sydney Koby, Jennifer Marsh, Adrienne McKenzie, Lauren Miller and Adole Mills.
Shelby Boehm, Olivia Carillo, Erin Gordon, Lia Manning, Katie Minion, Nicole Sidor, Leanne Szalai and Carla Wyman will play softball, while Alexandra Inman, Janessa Davis, Alannah Madliger, Nadine Taylor, Emily Tellier, Carolyne White and Leila Wong will all compete in synchronized swimming. On the tennis courts, West Van is represented by Matt Herron, Marco Gutierrez and Ryan Koo, while North Vancouver's Monika Tesiorowski will also pick up the racket. Alyssa Garrison, Celly Manning, Amelia Rajala and Robbie Wasylyshyn all will take part in triathlon, while Cassie Pentland and Julia Slavinski will hit the sand for the beach volleyball team. North Van's Matt Janzen and Jeff White will play for the boys volleyball team, while nine North Shore links are on the girls team - Alex Sheppard, Katherine Barends, Leanna Gildersleeve, Becky Kerr, Mackenzie Leyland, Kristen Lindahl, Amanda Madu and Melissa McGinn.
Eight North Shore athletes will play on the water polo team: James and Sean Brennen, Gillian Glass, Madelyn Jones, Michael McDonald, James McQuade, Amanda Rella and Joel Walsoff. The waterskiing team will be represented by North Shore athletes Dan Elliott, Emilie Johnson, Carlin Wilkin, Nelson Philips, Robbie Paterson and Eric MacDonald.
Thirteen local wrestlers will also try to grapple their way to the gold: Theresa Bowen, Andrea Cordero-Sapien, Mike and Morgan Dawson, Trevor Freeman, Clayton Hunter-James, Amir Miri, Brooks and Jenna Robinson, Jacklyn Simington, Deni Torgeson, Sandi Ware and Matt Yanagiya.
Argyle's Peter Therrien will coach the girls basketball team, while West Van's Peter Bant leads the cycling team into battle. Carson Graham's Tom Larisch coaches the boys rugby team, North Van's Jessde Symons is in charge of the girls soccer team, North Van's Jo Matheson will pencil in the lineup card for the girls softballers, Tamara Spence coaches the girls volleyball team and Katie Paterson will guide the waterskiing team.
As managers, North Van's Leslie Sacre and West Van's Stephanie Gatto are in charge of the girls basketball and co-ed cycling teams, respectively, while North Van's Sergei Palgov (boys) and Wendy Abbott (girls) will manage the soccer squads. Also managing are West Van's Brent Herron (tennis), North Van's Katlyn Moore (girls volleyball) and North Van's Kelly Schoultz (wrestling). West Vancouver's Dawn Copping and Peter Cardle will act as chaperones for the athletics team taking part in the games, while North Van's Michael Friedman oversees the girls rugby team. West Van's Laura Vittery will chaperone the sailing team, while Mary Ma of North Vancouver will keep an eye on the girls softballers and Chris Paterson oversees the waterskiing side.
