HANDSWORTH'S Robert Sacre and the rest of the Canadian Junior Men's (U-18) basketball team wrapped up their time at the Albert Schweitzer Tournament in Mannheim, Germany with a 3-3 record.
North Van's Sacre, a 6-11 post who is the only local link to the national squad, saw his team go 1-2 in its first three games as the Canadians beat Italy 67-65 and then fell 88-83 to Greece and 91-85 to Serbia-Montenegro.
In those games, Sacre was good for 15 points and 22 rebounds.
In Game 4, Sacre scored nine points and pulled down one rebound as Canada topped the host team 84-79. In Game 5,
Sacre chipped in with four points and two boards as the team fell to Spain 73-54.
However, Sacre was able to pour in 11 points and grab three rebounds as Team Canada recorded a 109-81 victory over China.
"I was really proud of our guys for bouncing back after a tough game against Spain," said head coach Greg Francis. "We showed improved team play and had significant contributions from all our players. I was happy with our performance here in Germany.
"The team is now more prepared to play against the top countries in the world," he said.
Sacre, who is in Grade 11, has already declared his intention to attend and play for the Gonzaga University Bulldogs upon graduation.
He recently led his Handsworth Royals to their first-ever B.C. AAA conference championship title only a month ago.
Sacre was also named the MVP of the provincial championship tournament.
