BOWEN Island's Rebecca Johnstone and the rest of the Simon Fraser University Clan women's 4x800-metre relay team is going for gold in Philadelphia this weekend.

The team was set to compete yesterday in the world-renowned Penn Relays, hosted by the University of Pennsylvania.

Johnstone, who finished first in the 400-metres at the 2006 Simon Fraser University Open and is the 2005 NAIA Outdoor 800-metres champ, will team with Julia Howard, Heather Mancell, Kristen Kolstad and Alexandra Krasovska (alternate) for the meet.

"We have never gone (to the Penn Relays) before, and I thought it would be a very exciting opportunity to compete against the top NCAA schools," said SFU head coach Brit Townsend.

"We currently hold the NAIA (indoor and outdoor) records and this is a great way for Julia (Howard) and Rebecca to end their careers. This is the biggest relay meet in North America."

In 2006, the SFU team has already brought home the NAIA Indoor 4x800-metre championship. It is expected that either Johnstone or Howard would run the final length.

"If everyone runs their best, then we can be in the top three," said a confident Townsend of her premier team. "We are always running to win."

Johnstone and the Clan will be back in action on Wednesday when they host the UBC Thunderbirds at Swangard Stadium for a dual meet.
